It is famous for its trailblazing efforts in conservation and protection of the world’s last two northern white rhinos and the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa. It boasts an astounding variety of animals including the non-indigenous Chimpanzees and the Big Five (Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Buffalo, Rhino-black, Southern white and Northern Rhino species) as well as the Cheetah and the Wild dog. Also found are the endangered Grevy’s zebra and Jackson’s hartebeest. Birders can look out for around 300 bird species. The combination of amazing wildlife and stunning views across the open plains guarantees every traveler an unforgettable safari experience. Despite the fact that it has a high predator density, the conservancy has an integrated wildlife and livestock area and runs a successful livestock Programme (Boran cattle herds). The reserve boasts of the Samburu Six (rare northern specialist species) such as the Somali Ostrich, Grevy Zebra, Gerenuk, The Beisa Oryx (Samburu Special), Guenther’s Dik Dik and the Reticulated Giraffe. The reserve is also home to large herds of Elephants while predators like the Lion, Cheetah and Leopard can be spotted in this rugged terrain. Samburu National Reserve is also a birding spot having over 450 species of birds.
